SUMMARY:
Paul is an MD and MBA with over 20 years in the medical/clinical industry. For the last three years Paul has focused his career on Medical Informatics. He is currently completing a three-year grant wherein his research included controlled vocabularies and structured terminology. Additionally, Paul developed a clinical database for a pediatric clinic and was instrumental in implementing an electronic medical record application. Residency trained and boarded in emergency medicine, Paul practiced as a clinician for 15 years.

· Coordinated with the PowerNote (Cerner PowerChart) Development Committee, to develop and implement structured physician documentation templates for clinical use. (implementation)
· Developed a clinical database for use by the Special Needs Pediatric Clinic. The database was designed using a Relational Database System with a secure web-based user interface. It will be utilized for research and clinical purposes. After development and demonstration of usability, the application was given to hospital IT Services for implementation. (implementation)
· PI on a K-22 grant submitted to the NLM to evaluate methods of representing medical questions using a vector space model with vector calculations match individual questions. Used Java and C programs with natural language processing techniques to find medical concepts in medical text using UMLS and SNOMED as sources for controlled terminology, and substitute concept identifiers (CUI) and semantic types (TUI) for use in calculations. · Member of the IDS Committee of the Family Practice Inquiries Network (http://www.fpin.org) participating in the development and deployment of a portal to evidence-based answers for clinicians’ questions. (research)
· Developed a policy for physician use of PDAs containing patient information that is in compliance with HIPAA standards. (publication)
· Contributed to an IAIMS-funded project to develop an application that allowed clinicians to access information from the Health Sciences Library using their PDAs and email. (publication)
